During her fine art studies at Stellenbosch University the students had a introductory course in ceramics.

They learnt about the technological process and properties of materials (like porcelain and terra cotta) used in pottery. They also explored the process of sawdust firing and glazing techniques.

Tertia’s interest in clay soon moved away from functional pieces to more sculptural shapes.
